Don't ask me why, but over the course of the past 6 months, I've been completely obsessed with online shopping from Sephora and Smashbox. It's most likely because with every purchase you get to try something ELSE and the game goes on and on, and I was ready.

I think my interest in Smashbox came from their reputation with primers since, yes, I am one to spend 10 to 15 minutes on their makeup every day, but I'm adamant that my makeup is to be done ONCE. I live in a humid climate, so getting something to last a solid 10 hours without touch-ups is very difficult, and primers have a reputation for doing just that, which Smashbox is known for. It was also a very popular brand in the BB cream market, so I started a collection as you can see.

I'm pretty satisfied with most of my products, so it's worth reviewing from top to bottom.

The Best and the Worst

My absolute top three would have to be: 1. Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer 2. Limitless 15 Hour Cream Shadow in Gemstone and 3. Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder.

Products to skip: 1. Photo Finish Foundation Primer in Color Correcting Adjust 2. JetSet Waterproof Eye Liner in Vamp (but probably all of them are bad) 3. Any individually priced makeup brushes, they work but they are WAY too expensive to buy separately.

I'll start soon with detailed product reviews from the beginning of the makeup routine.

Stay tuned for these Smashbox reviews!

Social media in terms of privacy can feel like a total betrayal of trust at times. You want to take part, but it just seems like you have to stay one step ahead of the game to get anything out of it. By now, you've probably read an article or two about the dangers of Facebook and all the privacy policy changes from this past year. As someone who uses Facebook for their day job, I even have trouble keeping up with all the privacy changes. So the following list is my most up-to-date privacy proofing systemt that's much simpler than going through every single setting and every past post/picture. NOTE: The results may scare you, but it's always better late than never to protect your privacy! This doesn't mean you have to take everything down from your profile, but it's to actually know what others can see on your profile publicly, since Facebook's preview option no longer exists. (Jerks!)

1. Create a Facebook Page & Switch Users

Go to Facebook.com and click "Create a Page" on the bottom right-hand side. It can be for anything you want: your car, your blowdryer, your pet, your blog, your small business, whatever! You may actually find fan pages useful on Facebook, but for right now, you're simply making this to preview your public profile. You can use one you've already made as long as you have administrative privileges. The page wizard is actually pretty helpful at setting up all the details of your page, but for the purposes of this, just type in gibberish and skip whatever possible. Once your page is set up, look to the top right hand blue bar and click the gear icon for a drop-down menu and click on your new page to switch the user. Your are now acting on Facebook as your fan page. Everything should now look different from your home page to your profile.

Now, type your name in the search bar. Find your profile and click on it. This is what ALL public Facebook users can see. At first, you may be relieved that your timeline and 1,999+ photos are hidden, but no so fast! Click on your profile photo and click through your albums tab, about tab, etc. Before my updates, the public could see my past 3 profile pictures at full size, all of the comments on it, every single cover photo, and videos. It's funny how these things are so much easier to miss without actually previewing your profile! It's pretty awful how Facebook changed all these default options, but hey, it can be fixed. So, click through everything and take note of anything you want taken off your public profile and switch back from the users on the top. The following steps should relieve all of your privacy worries...for this hot second on Facebook at least.

2. The Quick Fixes

Before you have a meltdown and delete your account, the following fixes in Facebook Privacy settings will make a huge impact in a small dose:

-On the main privacy page, click on "Who can look me up?" and edit it to "Only Friends". You may prefer not to hide yourself from the search feature all the time, but this is useful when undergoing a privacy makeover. This just makes it about 5 times harder for coworkers, frenemies, fake profiles, etc. to find you- especially while your profile is vulnerable privacy-wise.

-Delete any controversial cover photos. These things may have been a real selling point for Timeline, but there's a twist! They're public! Every. Single. One. Available for anyone to click through. Scenic photos or patterns, obviously aren't anything to worry about, but whichever ones you're not comfortable being public, you have to delete all together to have any sort of privacy.

-Edit privacy settings for all photo albums. On your own profile, click on photos, then albums. Scroll over the gear icon under each album to review the privacy settings for each. This is where your notes from the preview come in handy! It's easy to miss these pesky privacy settings since there are so many photos usually on a profile. So switch users back and forth from your page to your account to make sure all the unintended public albums are hidden. Facebook posts, check-in's, and statuses all work the same way where you need to change it one by one as they come.

-Profile Pictures now DEFAULT to "public" settings. To change this (i.e. so people can't pull up your profile picture at full size or view comments) you have to click on the gear icon for every photo since the timeline change. For me, it was three profile pictures, for you it may be a lot more than that. Double check by switching users with your page as many times as you need to.

3. Preventing Privacy Issues in the Future

-In the Facebook Privacy settings, click on "Timeline & Tagging" to the left. There you can turn on or off settings for mandatory review when your friends tag you in photos, statuses, posts, etc. It may seem like overkill but hey if if prevents a Facebook hack or an unflattering picture from getting to your timeline, you'll find it's worth its weight in gold.

-Set up friends lists. Facebook's new "smart lists" bring privacy settings to a new level. Lists like "close friends" and "aquaintances" not only help with privacy but also with relevancy of your posts. Again, it's a feature that may seem like overkill, but since people can't see these lists, it's become really useful in guarding certain pieces of information. Adding someone to your aquaintance list is the new "unfriend", in my opinion. You can also unsubscribe from people's abnoxious posts right from your news feed using the dropdown arrow to the right, but that's a side topic!

Hope I helped someone with this discovery!
It's something all graphic and web designers MUST do for all sorts of clients, but why do they just always want to come out so..blahh? This week at work has been slow, so I took an hour to dig for the best and brightest ideas for inspiration for our magazine's upcoming events calendar. I decided print event calendars are definitely the hardest to pull off, but let's just take a moment to drool over these print/life calendar masterpieces.
Of all my fashion shows, "What Not to Wear" is one of my most consistent favorites. Stacy London and Clinton Kelly's infamously quirky program brings fashion back to what it's intended for in the first place, REAL PEOPLE. In honor of my new job, I'd like to praise pair's the "Cost-Per-Wear" theory and what it means to me.

Here are the problems: I've always loved to go shopping, to a fault, but my current wardrobe plain and simple wasn't built for an office. So my brain quickly does the math that I need a TON of new clothes and my bank account has a decent amount more money in it. All lights say go, TIME TO SHOP!!! But thankfully, the Learning Channel's re-run's have made me think twice and plan ahead.

Checking Out the Place

Of course with any new job or interview, you want to put your best foot forward, so you do need two-three standard business professional looks in the back of your closet regardless of your work situation. However, every office culture is different, so I made sure to check mine out first before I hit the mall. Usually the definers are the age of your coworkers and how often clients come in. At my internship 2 years ago, I noticed about 4-6 people wear jeans every day to a 30-person office, so I wore my dark jeans most days. Mistake! Not that I saw any specific hindrances to my work, but Stacy and Clinton remind us always: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have! Besides, I admit it does feel better to be overdressed constantly than to be underdressed even once. Yes, this means more money, but that's where the budget-crunching theory comes in.

Quality

I went to a predominantly upper middle class public high school back in the day, and I must have spent an ungodly amount of money on clothes. The whole point back then was to have enough tops that you hardly ever repeated an outfit. While many of us still have that "never-repeat" concept ingrained in us, it's important to look at it in dollars. A pair of jeans in college would probably get about a minimum of 144 wears, and a trendy graphic tee would probably get worn at most 12 times. Spending $30 on the jeans and $25 on the top doesn't make as much sense now, as the cheap jeans would probably wear out quickly and the t-shirt comes out to being more than a dollar per wear, and it's a t-shirt! My gym clothes should cost more than that! That's the thing about applying the cost-per-wear ratio, you start to learn what things you SHOULD be spending money on and not feeling guilty about versus the things that are marked up past its use value. The biggest mistake Stacy and Clinton talk about on the show: Buying tons of cheap things you never wear, bad clothes that were gifts, failing to return things that don't fit, etc. My mother does this! She goes to a particular outlet store and buys shoes/clothes/bedding/accessories that you cannot return, and when she sees your look of disappointment, she responds with "They were ONLY 7 dollars" or "they were marked down from X amount!" That's the trap we all fall for, that's 7 dollars you're never getting back, and money is money.

The Minimal Approach

The most repetitive part of "What Not To Wear" is how adamant they are with their recipients about buying their wardrobe staples: suits, pants, blazers, dresses, skirts, and jackets. It would appear that it really leaves very little room for creativity. However, when you really look at it, the show is handing you $5000 dollars, they know you're probably going to do more shopping when you get home, so get the expensive stuff, i.e. the stuff with higher Costs-Per-Wear with the WhatNotToWear Card. By the end of the show there's usually only 20-25 items hanging on that rack (they toss out everything in their old closet for the first half) and I used to think, "Well, that's not a lot of clothes." So let's compare: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/what-not-to-wear/bailey-makeover.htm Assuming that all contestants buy about the same amount of staple pieces and that all of these can be work appropriate in one way or another, let's see how Bailey's work wardrobe matches up to what I have so far.

Work appropriate tops: Bailey...10 Me...21

Work appropriate dresses: Bailey...3 Me...3

Work full-length pants: Bailey...3 Me...2

Work appropriate bags: Bailey...4 Me...3

Cardigans: Bailey...3 Cardigans...6

Blazers/Jackets: Bailey...3 Me...0

Work appropriate skirts: Bailey...2 Me...1

Monday-Thursday Work Shoes: Bailey...8 Me...5

There's a lot more factors to consider, like that they had only a 2 day window to shop or the quality of the pieces, but for the most part, every episode shows a good minimal wardrobe we could all use. Even though I have tons of clothes in my closet, comparing to the "What Not To Wear" shopping lists highlights very simply what I'm missing staple-wise.

Since I landed my job I purchased 1 new pair of work shoes, 3 work tops in various sleeve lengths, and a printed cardigan. Comparing the minimal list above, I see I could use about 2 more pairs of work appropriate shoes, 1 more pair of work trousers, and make it a suit with a matching blazer and an additional white one for fun, plus I'll need 1-2 more work appropriate skirts. That's only 7 items, but they're items I'm obviously not gravitating instantly to in the stores and will vastly expand the versatility of my work wear.

What Not to SPEND

I'm no accounting major, but I know I've made some mistakes budget-wise filling what I thought were the empty holes in my closet. Now that you know the basics you're missing, you can calculate how much you really need to spend. Even though I still will wear my jeans and casual tops, I'm now getting dressed in business-wear 4 out of 7 days of the week, so this needs to be the priority. Printed seasonal tops I love, but this season I'll probably wear one about 3 times to work and 7 times outside of work. So if it goes out of style, the bare minimum cost per wear says I should've only paid 10 dollars for it. Oy Vay! If only that were the truth. I guess it's worse if you go out every season and buy many of these tops. It's tough love, but these purchase mistakes drive the fashion industry. Even if CPW is a hard pill to swallow, at least think of it in terms of what you currently spend on items that you do get the use out of. If you have no problem paying $120 for a work appropriate pencil skirt, wear it 40 times, then it's generally ok to spend 1/3 of that money on something else, like a bold necklace, you'll wear 1/3 of that time. The bare bones of this lesson is to spend LESS on what you'll wear LESS, and don't buy things you don't have a reason yet to wear!

The Good News

The good news about the CPW theory is that you can now justify some of those expensive designer purchases if they are a basic wardrobe staple. And, because the skirts at the store hang right next to the tops at the store, the price doesn't move up quite to the CPW ratio, which means you're saving money. However, it is important still to pay attention to the materials, customer reviews, etc for what will truly last the long haul. Does this mean I can afford black Manolos? No, but a solid colored pair of classic pumps does usually have a cost-per-wear around 144 and up, which is a decent chunk of change to shop with. Also, it's important to just pay attention to YOU. What do you wear every day? What clothes look best on your body shape? What article of clothing do you get the most compliments wearing? This all can alter what staples you need, how many you need, and what you should save and splurge on.

The over all London-Kelly message is to A. Stop spending money on CRAP, B. start spending money on quality items that will last you years, and C. pay attention to how often you will wear clothes. Even if it seems stupid to spend more on work-out pants than a stylish top for work, think about everything in dollars.

I consider myself a huge Kate Spade fan. My first knock off purse I bought in New York at 11 was a teeny denim "Kate Spade" shoulder bag with a coordinating multicolor striped wallet. The past year I've lusted for their sunglasses, "sparkler" clutches, bowler-style bags, their sea foam patent leather wallet, rain drop print laptop case, and every single purse they make with chain-detail straps. I seriously love it, but I can only pretend to own such items on my Pinterest boards at my current income level :) Still, what I adore almost as much as the products themselves is their graphic design and marketing strategies. I firmly believe this company is on the top of the technology wave through their use of social media, graphic design, and advertising strategies. A lot of brands should really take note.

Interactive Advertising Strategies

I'm no advertising major, but it's easy to see that Kate Spade harnesses current technology and uses it to creatively promote their products instead of alternatively cowering away from it and relying on the weight of their name alone like some of their counterparts.
With consumer society all together lowering their attention span, Kate Spade has remained on top of it through their use of interactive advertising, month-to-month design themes, and bringing in guest artists. In April 2012, Kate Spade's Blog released their interactive video titled: SWAN DIVE or CANNONBALL? seen here. It's a very cool choose-your-own-adventure type ad that goes far outside the box of current video commercials. There's even a free download at the end! They also have been paving the way with their use of Gif Images as design elements. Gif images have become increasingly popular in 2012 through Tumblr and jokey meme sites, and not since the MySpace era have they been used decoratively on websites. However, the creatives at Kate Spade looked through the reputation and used the moving images as a design opportunity, like for example: fireworks. The idea of advertising being an entertaining activity for the consumer is what brings it to new heights.

Frequent Campaign Shake-Ups

The marketing concept also plays out with Kate Spade's month to month pattern campaigns. Instead of picking a three color theme for the year, or even for many years, like some retail companies. Kate Spade changes up backgrounds and buttons to match patterns associated with the month's pattern theme. The periodic color changes flow very well with the products they've historically carried, but mixing it up once a month drives more visitors to the site and drives more intrigue in general to the brand. Although Kate Spade has always been a leading name in creativity, in an increasingly globalized society, it's hard to stay creatively cutting-edge, especially when you have monthly themes that penetrate into blogs, social media accounts, daily email blasts, advertisements, etc.. In today's society, there's so much visual information available, it's hard to say anyone is the best at something. So Kate Spade, again, confronts the issue head-on with their commissioned guest artists, like Mike Perry. It's a great way to parlay interest in the artist at the same time as your brand, and it keep things fresh. It also establishes a generous, positive vibe for the company, which is really hard to find in a cut throat economy like this one.

More On Thinking Friendly

Furthering this positive energy for Kate Spade is their use of Social Media. A lot of companies have jumped aboard the fast-moving social media train, but many can learn still from the practices at Kate Spade. They don't just tweet promotional website links, they also respond to their fans pretty regularly. It probably takes a lot of man-power on their part, but people SEE the kind effort, thousands of people see it. Also, instead of having a Pinterest account based solely on their products, they also pin items that go with the vibe of their marketing. Again, it's win-win mentality of helping-others-help-you that I respect so much from this company; they deserve their success.

Hiring the Best

There's lots of little lessons any company can take from the Kate Spade technology strategies I've commented on here, but none of it would work if you didn't have the right people laying the groundwork. The graphic designers play by the book at Kate Spade, using only the best typography and cleanest layouts, leaving room for them to play with their updated patterns, media, etc. The social media reps have to be excellent writers to be able to keep their content interesting and responses consistently going. Most of all, the products at Kate Spade are known to be high quality and beautifully designed, without that, there would be nothing to advertise.

Kate Spade, to me, just looks like a land of smart cookies. They have years of credibility going for them, but that doesn't mean your company can't operate on the principals and priorities that they do. If there's any one thing to learn here, don't be afraid of technology! Anyone can use it to their advantage, and it doesn't mean all the rules of design and business have to get thrown out.
It may take me a grand total of 20 minutes to get through one, but I think it's the little graphic designer that reveres all magazines as books of art. They're also a fun thing to ask people to bring back for you when they travel abroad. It's always fun to gush over every little clever design choice made. So until I make my fortune and purchase and frame every vintage/classic magazine cover I see, my Pinterest hoard will have to hold me over for now.
A lot of people will be biting their tongue in the near future for thinking this girl is ONLY a celebrity.

Lauren Conrad is most known for her role on the MTV reality shows, Laguna Beach and The Hills, but she is quickly making herself a household name through her creative career pursuits. Why? Because she is ONE smart cookie, and a girl that never let go of her dreams.

While I personally loved both shows, I understand as well as the next person that reality television doesn't always bode well for the lives its inflicted on. Especially when both shows had moments of questionable credibility and spawned sensationalized characters, labeled things like "Herpes Simplex 1 and Herpes Simplex 2" -(lol thank you Chelsea Lately.) It's amazing that anyone makes it out alive, let alone successful. Even in her TV days, Lauren Conrad knew how to rise above it. Hey, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade...or...a clothing line, a book series, a successful blog, another set of books, another clothing line, another blog, and won a variety of awards.

So, let's get down to business and talk about these clothes. Affordable fashion is all the rage right now and LC by Lauren Conrad at Kohls, is making a killing. I may be a bit late, but when I first came across this collection, I took every single thing into that Kohl's dressing room, EVERY. THING. and that's not like me at all. There's a stigma that comes with celebrity fashion lines- that it's just a fancy name to try to sell some clothes- but not in LC by Lauren Conrad's case. As I astutely recall from The Hills, her resume includes FIDM, Teen Vogue, and People's Revolution, so we can assume she knows her stuff.

The Kohl's line is great. The affordable casual-wear is in all the trendy cuts of the season like you would see at a Forever 21, but are done in a very focused color palette and come in a decent assortment of sizes and colors. Once you see these clothes in person, you will know she has a very nice eye for detail, color, and print. The first trip I bought three adorable tank tops, a sheer long sleeve shirt, a cute 3/4 sleeve layering piece, and a marvelous pair of bold stud earrings. All I could think was, "She must know me or something." I get nothing but compliments when I wear something from the line. Also, the pieces are fairly versatile, and for example, look good with both jeans or a dressy skirt. I cannot say enough how obsessed I am with her pattern choices. I'm used to seeing seasonal collections with 1 or 2 exceptional patterns, but her spring collection is loaded with pattern, and I'm in love with nearly all of it. LC by Lauren Conrad is a cheerful, preppy collection, full of pieces 100% on trend for Summer 2012. I highly recommend it, and after you sign up for all the Kohl's coupons/deals, it's like they're giving it to you! Her fame no doubt has influenced the success of her designs, but the girl has great taste.

There are few things that I adore more than a beautiful pattern...

On google you can search wall paper/printed fabrics by brand, colors, and location, but you can't really search pattern by style. A lot of designers would agree with me when I say Pinterest has turned this issue upside down! With the use of tags, popularity of high-quality photos, and a growing number of modern businesses using Pinterest to share their products, you can always count on the site to find the best of the best. Before Pinterest, you could almost never find exact patterns you're looking for, and the trendy ones were muddled between irrelevant search results or outdated styles. Now that the pattern world, among other things, has become more accessible, take advantage and cover your world with pattern!

Pattern Can Be Incorporated Anywhere

I love wall paper on the ceiling, it's unexpected and cool. It doesn't necessarily have to be this bold - even a traditional paisley pattern on a ceiling brings a whimsical quality to any room. Just make sure the color is something you could live with for a long time and style the rest of the room around it. http://www.mylifestylebyrebeca.com/2012/06/escapada-marrakech-peacock-pavillions.html

Bold Patterned Bedding

The rule here was to keep everything simple against this high contrast dream-catcher pattern. They left the walls and curtains white so the eye is drawn from the pattern, to the bright pillows, to the outstanding mirror wall, to the mid-century modern, oversized chandelier. The result is just gorgeous. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/high-impact-dec-140771

Metallic Wallpaper

Don't let it scare you. Metallics are a neutral, and clearly look amazing with the right styling. It goes especially with the mid-century look, but the matte areas make it very 2012. It's also a good idea to keep it in a traditional, simple repeat pattern like this. #Drool-worthy. http://cribcandy.com/walls/b122f2e77e2b04afdb004714301c2af7&pageoffset=264

Traditional Pattern, in Non-traditional Colors

If this pillow were done in a medley of olive greens or browns, it completely changes the vibe of the room. I like this kind of pattern in girls' rooms, in female dominated apartments, etc. For young kids, I like the idea of doing these kinds of patterns versus Bratz Doll varieties or confining yourself to all pastels. It's one of those themes that can grow with them, and the pink/red is a very on-trend color combination right now.

Non-traditional Pattern in Muted Tones

How chic is this?? The wall paper has been used by many famous designers, such as Emily Henderson, and it totally maintains the balance needed to add life to a room without making the room look crazy. Simply Perfect.

Mixing Different Pattern Types

This should definitely go under the advanced category, because it takes a lot of guts to mix 3 bold patterns- not to mention coordinating them to begin with. This example works because they're on a neutral chair, the center pillow has two of the same colors as the water color pattern, and the blue pillow's pattern is geometric and small enough to contrast the others. Also, the fact that the pillows are the same size, makes the trio of patterns look very deliberate. Combinations like this just take a guess and check, and a good eye. Again, super girly, but wonderful!

Bold Pattern AND Bold Color

If you're half as obsessed with color and pattern as we are, then you probably love this look. The trend of wall-papering entry ways is one of our favorites. It adds a lot of life to a small space. Even though both the artwork and the wall paper are loud in nature, this works because the wall paper is in a neutral color palette, and the colors and the brush strokes in the painting contrast enough against it. Also, the chair, the cabinet, the rug, the floor, and the moldings are all done in neutrals, and the pink from the painting is repeated in the fresh flowers. The space is in perfect balance the way it is, and for example, if they were to add a throw pillow to the chair, it would HAVE to be white, or if they were to change out the flowers, they would HAVE to be a warm color, matched in the painting. It takes a lot of thought and risks, but the result is fantastic.

The classic bib necklace

The necklace in a neutral or metallic shade is most reminiscent of mid century style. It flatters most necklines, it can fill in negative space created by a v-neck or scoop blouse. It can be worn under the an open-collared top, or over a boat neck dress. The ribbon detail makes it seem extra delicate and adorable. http://capecodcollegiate.tumblr.com/

The bright chunky bead necklace.

Also reminiscent of mid century costume jewelry with the bold pop of color. The bright coral color and geometric beads are also very in right now. The necklace is perfect to throw on top of a plain gray shift dress and will keep the entire outfit from fading into the background. http://baublebar.com/index.php/red-geo-strands.html

Wear this and you will not even be able to walk into a room without people complimenting it. But for the price, it should be a given. You could spend 15 dollars on the rest of the outfit and still look great. However, it's really memorable in the same way, so if you're like me, until you have a million dollar necklace collection, you can achieve the same look by layering necklaces you already have or adding inexpensive ones from Forever 21. It just gets tricky to adjust all the chain links, so give this time to play with. Also, comment here if you know of any place selling chain extenders online. http://www.etsy.com/listing/73698850/one-of-a-kind-art-deco-peacock-necklace?utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_campaign=Share

A lot of very talented designers have emerged from Project Runway, but one we hope to hear more from, is Season 9 finalist, Viktor Luna. Known for his humble attitude and avant garde use of photographic prints, this New York fashion designer is one to watch out for in Fall 2012.

1. Visuals= the key to a great slide show

Collect your images. Visuals are key to a great slideshow. If you’re getting them from an online source, like google images, make sure to select the option for large images. Many photos on the internet are purposely sized very small, and since your visual information should take up roughly ⅔ of every slide, a small photo can look unprofessional. Do not be tempted to stretch photos, because that can skew your image or take down the resolution. If you must size a photo down, make sure to constrain proportions. On a Mac, you can do this with by holding “option” and “shift”. On a PC, the key command is “shift” and “alt”.

2. Text/color combinations

It’s best to pick a background, or background color that is simple and doesn’t distract too much and carry it through the entire powerpoint. The best color combinations are ones that contrast enough but don’t compete and strain the eyes. There are a lot of websites on this subject, and a lot of research has been done. The safest combinations decided by most are black on white or white on black. Other safe choices are green and white, or blue and white. Colors that are too vivid together, like bright red text on a bright blue background, strain the eyes and makes the text almost look like it is shaking.

Keep personal note cards or use the notes feature on powerpoint to keep the majority of your information.

5. Make Them Connect

The most beneficial thing you can do with your powerpoint presentation, is have visuals that supplement your message. So don’t be afraid to load your slide show down with charts, graphs, and statistics. Just be sure to make them legible and don’t put too much information on one slide. If you feel that a concept is based explained through some sort of illustration, it probably can.

6. Don’t be scared to deviate a little from the world of Microsoft Powerpoint.

Open source sites: Free presentation creation programs online allow you build slideshows and post them online for free.

Slideshare/Sliderocket: Both websites allow you to create an account and upload your powerpoint slides for free. This is useful because in the end, you are provided a link to your work, and you can open the link on any computer. No more fumbling around with getting powerpoint to open, or having Mac/PC transition errors. It’s just one extra step, and it makes your presentation more accessible and professional.

Google docs/ Prezi: Both are online sources are platforms to create your slideshow and have a place to view it online.

Google docs eliminates the dilemma of a team member that claims they can’t help contribute because they don’t have powerpoint. All you need is internet and a Gmail account, both of which many college students and professionals should already have. With Google docs, you can select the share option and all members can work on the presentation from ANY computer. It follows many of the same guidelines as Microsoft Powerpoint, so usability is really high. The technology has been around for a little while now and you probably know about it, but it’s a valuable resource that keeps getting better and better with every update, and it’s a truly a breakthrough in terms of team projects.

Prezi is a recently popular source that helps you build a creative presentation online, that’s outside of box (compared to a typical slideshow) in that it’s completely animated with Javascript and Jquery, and you don’t even have to touch a lick of code. It’s quickly becoming the new design standard and the website is completely user friendly. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend setting time aside to play with both softwares before your next big presentation comes up. You won’t regret it.

The best part about these sites is that it helps your slide show be more universally compatible as well as provide a simple way to give a uniquely designed presentation.

Starting Out

1. Link your account to follow all your Facebook/Twitter friends.

They already know you! Plus, it’s a quick way to really jump in and see what Pinterest has to offer-based on what your friends are pinning. You may quickly start to see what things you are and aren’t interested in, in which case, check out tip #2 and #6.

2. Check out the categories at the top.

Roll your mouse over the word “Everything” in the top tab and instantly the famous Pinterest categories list pops up. Each category holds a feed of what people are pinning based on each of those categories, and it goes on forever. Refresh it, and you’ll see that it’s pretty much operating live. You might see things that don’t belong in that category because right now Pinterest is having an issue with people mislabeling their boards and some are possibly marketing scams. Don’t fret! Just keep scrolling, because soon enough you will find something in the category that makes your mouth smile, your eyes tear, and your heart sing- right next to the obvious marketing scam or annoying miscategorized item.

3. Like things!

Just like on Facebook, Pinterest allows you to like things, but Pinterest lets you keep record of all those items. There’s no proper etiquette for which pins you should “Like” and which you should “Repin”, but if you’re first starting out, I’d recommend exploring and “liking” things first, knowing that you can go back and organize it later. You can see all your like-d items by rolling your mouse over your account at the top right of the page. It’s a really good way to keep track of the pin you want to organize in the future.

4. Create Your Boards

Pinterest has a default set of boards you can use, or you can scrap them and make your own. There’s no official standards for how you should set these up, but typically the more specific you get the better. Let your creative juices flow! Basing them on the categories mentioned in tip #2, is a good idea also, so you don’t contribute to the miscategorization problem :/ Feel free to pin original items using the “Add +” button on the top right corner. “Add a pin” is for linking a website, which is the most popular method. “Upload a pin” is a great way to upload something of your own, like a great travel photo or a successful craft. There’s rumors about licensing, but so far none of the radical claims have been proven true. To be safe, if you don’t own the material, just make sure the proper link is attached somewhere to the pin. It’s really NBD.

5. Start Pinning!

Once you’ve done your exploring, followed your friends, and you’ve created a rough set of boards, it’s time to start pinning like crazy. You may want to pack yourself a water bottle and a snack, keep your phone close by, and put on some sweats, because most people hardly come up for air when they first get going on Pinterest. Seriously, it’s addicting. Again, don’t worry! This behavior is normal. Keep the tab open all the time and eventually you will begin the desensitization process, pinning like a machine, but capable of stopping at your own will. Once you’ve hit this phase, congratulations, you are ready for the last 5 tips.

Advanced Tips

6. Unfollowing Boards

Pinterest is a positive community, you can’t downgrade things or dislike them, but some hardcore pinners-would like to. Everybody has those facebook friends that pin things that annoy us to death, for me it was “thinspiration” pics next to Paula Dean recipes all over my home page. When I discovered the “unfollow” feature, it made my day probably as much as the “unsubscribe” feature on facebook. Once you start spotting the boards your friends are pinning to that you dislike, simply click on their account, find the suspect “board”, and simply click, unfollow beneath it. You can also click “unfollow all” if you want to be super dramatic. They don’t get a notification for it, so why not? It really cleans up your home page. Pinterest is what you make it, so be selfish! Also, it’s good to use on those annoying friends that go-or think they go-to your rival school and pin annoying memes about it all the time. Unfollow, and smirk.

7. Editing Your Pins

Another cool feature I’ve started to use is Editing pins. My dream closet board was starting to get large and unruly, so I created a new one for jewelry. Instead of repinning all your items and invading your friends’ feeds, simply roll your mouse over the pin, click edit, change it to the board of choice, and click save. You’ll notice the pin is now on your new board and no longer on your old one. It’s a good way to spring clean and really organize your boards.
8. Find The Best Pinners to Follow

There’s a lot of blogs rolling with the Pinterest wave, making it easier for basic users to go on a following binge with no regrets. For example, http://www.stylelist.com/ and http://www.refinery29.com/ create regular features for creative readers/trade insiders that are great pinners to follow. Also, never underestimate the power of a good Google search for your specific interest of pinners. Use the search feature to find famous designers, companies, artists, photographers, and blogs themselves that you know from the “outside”, because almost all professional creatives have a Pinterest account nowadays.

9. Labels and the Search Feature

Pinterest has a couple of disadvantages heavy users know all too well about; the categories are a little off, and the search results don’t go back as far as we all know they should. With the growing popularity of the site, these things are bound to change, but one way we can improve the experience ourselves is to label as much as we can. I know I’ve been guilty of pinning things with no text or just symbols and having uncategorized boards. It may not solve the problem completely, but it will help your pins be found more easily, and especially if the search results pages gets fixed.

10. Get Ideas from the “Popular” section

If you’re looking to gain followers, on top of organizing your boards, labeling things properly, and connecting through other social media, it’s a good idea to take notes on the “popular” section. It may be too mainstream to be your cup of tea, but still there’s some treasures in the lot. Check out the original pinners and see if they have any boards worth following, click through blogs that may be referenced, and it’s a quick way to see what’s trending amongst the entire community.

Pinterest is a site that helps you connect with the world visually and creatively, so don’t ever hold back!

Bonus Safety Tips:-Make sure you flag all inappropriate pins!
-If a pin claims that you have won a contest, Google that sh*t to see if it’s real!
-Remember, Pinterest is PUBLIC and all pins can be traced back to its original upload, so pin wisely!
It’s no secret that HGTV has been on their A game the past few years with the influx of new DIY trends with the less than happy economy. While there are many shows vying for my attention this season, the surprising newcomer has got to be "The High Low Project".

You’ll probably recognize her, as she was a cheerful home stager on another show from HGTV's past and a current face of Target, but home stager she is no more. If this show’s made one thing clear, Soto in undoubtedly a DESIGNER first. Her humble, hard working attitude, just makes her more lovable to watch. I’ve watched almost every episode this season to see if her identical splurge vs. save designs could hold up for a whole season, and it was the most recent episode “Gregg and Anson's Apartment” that secured my adoration for the show. I’m not going to lie, there was one episode that got a little too Target-plug-happy, but I was pleased to see that this was not repeated so heavily in the following episodes.

What I like most about this show compared to the “Design on a Dime” varieties (before Casey--she’s a saint!) is that Sabrina’s chosen “projects” are not at all scraping the bottom of the barrel. You know which ones I’m talking about! The ones where they staple gun placemats to walls, ugh :/ Sabrina is a perfectionist with years of experience, so all of her advice is very specific, but inspires only logical DIY crafts. “Use oil base paint and quality brushes for this.” The concept of the show is to create a room that fulfills all the clients’ needs and design preferences, and then Soto goes back through and replaces all the high-design splurge items with affordable options and a handful of craft projects. I think what astounded me the most this episode was when she replaced the $510 one-of-a-kind Hermes pillow with DIY pillows made with chic vintage silk scarves. They were to-die for!

Another unexpected newcomer, is her cohost/carpenter, Christopher White. Together they are a wonderful design duo, but to my surprise, Chris made some pretty slick design choices on his own. He’s a quiet one, but he has amazing taste, just as his counterpart. Oh AND he can build basically anything! NBD.

This show seemed at first a little too good to be true next to the David Bromstad-Emily Henderson-Genevieve Gorder-and Candice Olson-greats of HGTV, but “The High Low Project” has won my picky viewership, and I recommend all design-lovers watch an episode or two. :)

Find an Image

Find an Image/texture. If you're using Google Images, make sure it's set to Large, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one with a good resolution. -save to desk top -no watermarks. Open illustrator. Set the document to 8.5 by 11 or "Letter size" Go to Window>workspace> and then click "default" or in CS4 it's called "essentials". Go to file, place. Find the image you saved to the desk top and click. Check the size. How much space does it take up on the art board? Illustrator tells no lies. If it doesn't extend far enough to the width of the page, it's usually advised that you should just find another picture. If it is too large, to size it down, use the black arrow key to select it, grab one of the corners, and MAKE SURE to hold down "option" and "shift" on your keyboard to make sure the dimensions are locked. People screw this up more than you know. That's why things look unintentionally stretched or too pixelated. Looking ok so far? Bonus points if you open Photoshop, open your picture, and adjust the brightness/contrast or add your own extra flare to the image via color or a filter. If you do this you will have to remember to re-save it as a png or jpeg to place it back into illustrator.

Now you're ready for your text!

Find a font. You can use one you already like on your computer or you can download a free one at websites like dafont.com. If you use this website, make sure you use the preview your text option, it just makes things go quicker. If you downloaded something from dafont.com, you need to make sure you open it up in the finder, and then open up (in applications) Font Book. Scooch the windows around so you can see both on your screen, and then click and drag the new font folder over to fontbook, under the "User" tab on the left. In illustrator, go up into "Type">font> and see if the name of your downloaded font is in the system. Over in the left hand tool bar, click the "T" for type, and use your mouse to make your text box. Select your font and type away. Adjust the font size as needed. The text should not exceed the rectangular area of your picture.

Time to make your clipping mask!

In the tool bar, click the black arrow button at the top left, and now click on your text to move it on top of the picture you have in your artbox. Make sure the text is still selected, (blue box around it) and click at the top Object>Create outlines and this turns your text into a vector. If "create outlines" is grayed out, (technical term!) then you may need to click on the black arrow button on the tool bar again, and make sure that your textbox is selected. Having that black arrow still selected, click on a white area in or around the document frame that is LEFT and ABOVE your picture with the text resting on it. Click and drag down and to the right, making a rectangle selection that includes all of your text as well as the picture. You did it right if you see that everything now has the blue selection box boarders after you've lifted your hand off the mouse. Now that everything is selected go to Object>clipping mask>make. If it worked you should see your text, but instead of it being black, it contains the texture from your photo, like the example shown.
